About Me - Hobbies

Everyone has their own hobbies. In computer programming, the terms "static" and "dynamic" are contradictory. If I am to say which term suits me most, I would most probably choose "static". In my glossary, "dynamic" are used to describe those who are very active in doing things, for example those who do vigorous sports, being alert to changes around, being able to respond quickly or even being active in expressing themselves.

As a "static" person, my hobbies will certainly not be some vigorous activities like basketball and athletics. I enjoy rather "tranquil" hobbies like working with computers, reading, writing, listening to music and cogitating about some spiritual issues etc. In Hong Kong, I do not frequently go out primarily because it is too scorching in summer while chillingly cold in winter. Air Pollution and noise everywhere is a reason as well.

Computers

I started using computers more than 10 years ago. I used it mainly for word processing and playing some little computer games. As a curious and ambitious person, obviously I was not satisfied with merely using it - I wanted to find a sense of achievement in myself, which is the thing that I have lacked for the decade. Computer programming is not really popular in Hong Kong, especially among junior secondary school students. In my class perhaps I am the only student who knows some programming. This gives me some kind of superiority. A successful person will not consider such superiority really important, yet for a mediocre person like me, some kinds of superiority, though ephemeral, is sufficient to prop me up and not feeling too disappointed about myself. Yet in the past, I did not place computer programming in a top priority so I advanced very slowly. As the field of computing is evolving so quickly I have to make use of the time to, again, keep abreast of the latest technology. This is my hobby and I hope I can, in one day, turn my hobby into the foundation of future success.

I have been trying to assemble my ideas in programming into viable software products. Having a renowned product to offer on my homepage has long been my dream. As technologies are constantly evolving, I have to acquire knowledge in more and more areas in order to keep abreast of the latest trends in the computer industry, so this is a difficult process for me. I am now developing software products using Microsoft® Visual Basic™ Version 6 and I hope that I can finish my first official product in early 2001.

Although I have some flair in art, unfortunately I don't have a pair of dexterous hands. I can appraise which is better and which is worse. Yet I cannot draw really well, no matter on paper or with a graphics rendering software like CorelDRAW. When I design graphics for my software products, I really have difficulty finishing them. I use far more time than the others to do the same thing. So I may consider "stealing" graphics from the web - there are many royalty-free graphics on the web and I may just borrow them for my homepage and software instead of working on them myself. Writing

My languages are not pretty bad (hope that you will agree), especially my writing skills. For this reason, I am interested in writing on my own. In my school (which is a high school, in fact) I was taught to write discussion and argumentative essays, and in earlier years I wrote some short stories. I have been an editor for the students' school newspaper and undertaken the responsibility as a secretary for several clubs in school for a year. I have written on quite many issues, and I am planning to organize them and post them on my homepage later, in the "Articles" section. Up to this moment I have not yet written an article to share with fellow visitors my experience in computing, so I am hurrying to get everything on track so that I can officially open my homepage to the public as soon as possible.

It's a regret that I didn't read many books in the past. In school I had access to some literatures from some contemporary writers, yet I am finding more texts on the Internet, thanks to the continuation of the Project Gutenburg. With concerted efforts from the editors, I will have access to the greatest literature library online, and I can download and read them offline. Reading more texts from good writers can substantially improve my vocabulary as well as the way I present my ideas to my fellow readers. Since I am spending most of my time learning and writing software products I have to, reluctantly, defer my reading scheme to late 2000.

Music

Listening to music has long been a favoured hobby of mine. I have been a staunch supporter of classicals for many years. Recently, I have started listening to golden oldies from 60s - 80s, thanks to an RTHK radio 1 oldies programme at 20:00HKT daily. Oldies can relieve my exam pressure while I was revising for the forthcoming public examination. I enjoy some love songs and movie soundtracks in particular. I don't have many CDs or vinyl records for oldies, and I listen to oldies through listening to that oldies radio programme and downloading MP3s. These MP3s are difficult to find. Yet with the file sharing software like Kazaa Lite and WinMX, I can download more MP3s and it will be easier for me to learn about the oldies. I have lots of CDs and vinyl records for classicals, and the archive is so great that it is quite difficult for me to listen them all. To see a list of MP3s I currently have, click here. I have once practised piano as well. Yet it is my lack of perseverance and talent that hinders me from progressing further.

Spiritual Development

I will sometimes cogitate about some religious issues. I am in a Catholic family. Although I am not really pious to God, frankly, I hope one day I can be. Reading the Bible gives me a sense of repentance and an opportunity to refresh my understanding in God's commands. However, with such a busy and suffocating lifestyle it is not easy for me to allocate ample time for such development, and I hope that one day, when I have finished catching up with the latest trends in computing I will have time to do so.
