Hello. I am Bernard Chan, a typical Hong Kong student who has some passion in computer programming. From PC BASIC in early 90s to Visual Basic 6 nowadays, I have witnessed series of revolutions in the computer industry at an exponential rate, as from text-based OS like MS-DOS to GUI OS like Windows 2000 we are having today. Development in the computer industry has undergone a drastic change, thanks to the immense popularity of the Internet. I have developed applications in QBasic for quite many years, until the whole stage was relocated to Windows since the release of Visual Basic 1.0. It was simple enough to use even by an "idiot", as was claimed by Microsoft. Many more features are being incorporated as newer versions are released. I have decided to design some great freeware programs for people to use, and I hope that my products can eventually be as successful as Evrsoft's 1st Page 2000. At least, I have this wish in mind while I am writing this article. As I am a student still, I have not yet premeditated any future plans on making lucrative profits with my software design business. I just hope that others will benefit from my software and ultimately make their experience with computers a more enjoyable one. I enjoy the bustling activities in the computer industry, and to see how the industry expands with the injection of innovative ideas every day.
I have a rather introverted disposition. I don't frequently participate in outdoor activities. Since Hong Kong is a tiny place and transportation is convenient, I enjoy travelling to different places when I have leisure time. When I am not going out I use most of my time using my computer, mainly for writing my own programs, accomplishing some word-processing tasks and constructing my homepage. While I am resting at home waiting for the release of public examination results, my PC becomes my chief companion for a number of months. Listening to music is also a favourite hobby of mine. I enjoy both classicals and golden oldies in the 60-70s. When I have extra time, I will be reading some foreign literatures and writing some essays.
In August 2000, I was offered a place for the course of computer engineering in the University of Hong Kong. This allows me to acquire knowledge further in computer-related fields. In this course, I am exposed to materials from a number of aspects of computer science as well as electronics, and are very useful for me to work in related areas upon graduation.
I enjoy learning new things, though I don't have much academic achievement. Therefore, I uphold the principle of "Learning for life". I have interests in anything unfamiliar to me, and when I have time, I will allocate some time reading books on natural surroundings, spiritual development and science. I am particularly interested in languages. Though I don't have much talent in languages, I will be interested to improve my English and learn a new language. I hope that by doing so I will be able to understand more about foreign cultures and, more practically, possess certain advantages over the others in finding a good job upon graduation.
